KIEV, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine has proposed supplying Russia with electricity in exchange for natural gas, a deputy fuel and energy ministry of Ukraine said Thursday.

Ukraine supplies electricity to a number of countries in central and eastern Europe. The country also supplied power to Russia from December 2004 to July 2006 but a price dispute led to the arrangement being broken off.

"We have six idle gas-fuel oil units with a capacity of 800 megawatts and two with a capacity of 300," the press service for Deputy Minister Oleksiy Sheberstov quoted him as saying Thursday. "We have proposed that Russia consider supplying natural gas to these units and [receiving] exports of power produced at them to Russia."

He said in winter Ukraine did not have extra power for exports but had free units to produce electricity that were currently idle because they were unprofitable.
