KIEV, September 20 (RIA Novosti) - Nine miners were killed, one wounded and 43 went missing Wednesday after a blast at a coal mine in eastern Ukraine, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

"On September 20 at 5.10 a.m. [2.10 GMT], a sudden ejection of coal and gas occurred at the Zasyadko coal mine in Donetsk," the spokesman said. "The fate of 43 miners, who were 1,078 meters [3,537 feet] below ground, remains unknown."

The spokesman said work at the mine was stopped, as 56 rescue teams work at the scene.

This incident follows another coal mine blast in eastern Ukraine, when at least six miners lost their lives in August.
