KIEV, September 21 (RIA Novosti) - The Ukrainian parliament voted Thursday to set up a temporary commission to monitor the investigation into the murder of journalist Heorhiy Gongadze.

Gongadze was kidnapped and murdered September 16, 2000. The circumstances of his death became a national scandal and sparked protests against the government of then-President Leonid Kuchma.

The investigation into Gongadze's murder has been ongoing for five years, and Gongadze's killers have yet to be publicly identified and brought to justice, although three men allegedly involved in the murder are now on trial.

The parliamentary commission will consist of deputies from all five factions in the Supreme Rada, and will have a one-year mandate.

Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko said September 16 he will do everything possible to solve the case of the slain journalist.

"Gongadze's name became for Ukraine a symbol of political change and freedom of speech," Yushchenko said.
