MOSCOW, November 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's lower house of parliament addressed the parliaments of the United Nations member states on Friday, asking them to officially condemn the 44-year economic embargo against Cuba by the United States.

The head of Cuba's parliament, Ricardo Alarcon, addressed the State Duma on his official visit to Moscow Friday.

At the Duma session, lawmakers adopted a statement saying UN parliaments "should urge the United States to lift this embargo."

The UN voted for an end to the embargo in February 2003, and again in November 2005.

The Cuban official, widely considered a possible successor to Fidel Castro, thanked the State Duma, which had already adopted similar statements in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999, and hailed the "sincere friendship and cooperation between Russia and Cuba."

The Duma statement said the continuing embargo against Cuba demonstrates "harsh pressure by the U.S. on a sovereign state" and "a massive violation of rights of not only Cubans and Americans, but also citizens of other countries," preventing them from developing political, trade and economic, cultural and other links with Cuba.

The U.S. began its embargo against Cuba in 1962, three years after the Cuban revolution, which brought Fidel Castro to power.
