MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - Transport ministers and officials from the Asia-Pacific region have signed a trans-Asian railroad agreement in South Korea to address the region's growing transport needs, Russia's Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The Russian-proposed Inter-governmental Agreement on the Trans-Asian Railways was one of the highlights of UNESCAP's ministerial conference in Busan November 6-11.

"The agreement on the Asia-Pacific railroad network envisions inter-mode transport services between Asia and Europe," the ministry said. "It will link the region, including Russia's Far East, to Europe."

The Trans-Siberian Railroad, which runs 9,288 kilometers (5,771 miles) across eight time zones from Moscow to Vladivostok in the Far East and is a major goods artery linking East and West, will be a trans-Asian railroad network section in Russia.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is the largest of the UN's five Regional Commissions, in terms of population served and area covered. It is the only inter-governmental forum, covering the entire Asia-Pacific Rim. It aims to promote economic activity and welfare in the region's developing countries.
