A senior U.S. diplomat has denied a suggestion that air defense missiles could be deployed in Georgia or elsewhere in the Caucasus.
TBILISI, March 30 (RIA Novosti) - A senior U.S. diplomat has denied a suggestion that air defense missiles could be deployed in Georgia or elsewhere in the Caucasus.

A senior Pentagon official said March 1 that the U.S. would like to place elements of its missile defense system in the South Caucasus, but did not specify which of the three former Soviet countries it would choose - Armenia, Azerbaijan or Georgia - with the latter being anxious to join NATO.

The statement coincided with U.S. plans revealed in January to deploy elements of its missile defense system in the Czech Republic and Poland as a counter to possible attacks from Iran or North Korea, whose nuclear programs have provoked international concerns.

Matthew Bryza, deputy assistant secretary of state for European affairs, told a news conference in Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, that the U.S. has not been considering placing components of its ballistic missile shield in the Caucasus, but rather in Poland and the Czech Republic.
