TEL AVIV, April 11 (RIA Novosti) - Israel's foreign minister said Wednesday at a meeting with the secretary of Russia's Security Council that the international embargo on arms deliveries to Lebanese militants should be observed.

Last year, Israeli authorities accused Syria of passing modern weapons bought in Russia to Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah. In September 2006, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres said his country had examples of Russian weapons used by Hezbollah during the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah last summer.

"[Tzipi] Livni stressed the urgent need to stop deliveries of Russian weapons via Syria to the Hezbollah organization. The minister said stopping arms supplies would meet the interests not only of Israel but, more importantly, Lebanon, and the entire international community," Livni's staff said.

Livni said at the meeting with Igor Ivanov that the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East region could only be stabilized through full and meticulous implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the conflict.

Russian officials have said military cooperation with Syria is conducted under strict observation of the relevant international commitments. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier Russia would adopt serious measures if Russian weapons were proven to have been delivered to third countries.

In October 2006, then Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said he believed the issue was closed.

The Israeli ministry's staff said Livni called on Russia to use its influence in Syria and Iran to help win the release of three Israeli soldiers held captive by Palestinian and Lebanese militants.

Two soldiers were seized a year ago by Hezbollah, and a third was seized by Palestinian militants.

She thanked Russia for its active participation in resolving the issue.

Igor Ivanov and Tzipi Livni also discussed the Palestinian-Israeli settlement and the Iran nuclear problem.
