Georgia's radar detected in Georgia-S.Ossetia conflict area

18:1729/04/2007
MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - A Georgian radar is illegitimately located in the area of the Georgia-South Ossetia conflict area, the headquarters of the mixed peacekeeping forces said Sunday.

South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia following a bloody conflict that killed hundreds in 1991-1992 and peacekeepers have been stationed in the region ever since. They comprise Russian, Georgian and South Ossetian troops.

"Military observers of the mixed peacekeeping force from the three sides and officers of the OSCE mission have monitored the south-eastern area of the peacekeeping contingent's responsibility and confirmed again that a Georgian radar is illegitimately located 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) to the south of the village of Shavshvebi," the headquarters said in a statement.

The pro-Western Georgian government of Mikheil Saakashvili has repeatedly said it is determined to bring the breakaway region back under its control.
