Ukraine's Yushchenko opposes early polls after September
Topic: Political crisis in Ukraine
On April 2, and later on April 26, the Ukrainian president signed decrees disbanding parliament and setting early polls for June 24, which resulted in a long political tussle between Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych that ended May 4 with a deal to hold early elections, with the date as yet undecided.
"The early elections will definitely take place, but I would like to say that they will not be held in October [or later]," Yushchenko said, adding that only dialogue can resolve the current political standoff in the country.
The president said earlier that he could move the date for the polls around slightly, which in line with the Constitution must be held 60 days following the presidential decree.
The pro-presidential opposition party, Our Ukraine, wants the elections to be held in July, while the Party of Regions, led by Yanukovych, and its allies in the ruling coalition, the Socialists and the Communists, would prefer to postpone the elections until October or November.
The coalition's intention to hold the elections in late fall was again voiced Friday by Oleksandr Moroz, the Ukrainian parliament's speaker and a close ally of Yanukovych, who said that Ukraine will not hold early parliamentary elections before November.
"Much will get back to normal by that time, and we will restore all government institutions to constitutional norms," Moroz said, adding that Yanukovych and Yushchenko were currently involved in negotiations on the issue.
