MADRID, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - A Ukrainian adopted by a Spanish family as a child following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster was detained for murdering two women Monday, one of whom was his 20-year-old Spanish fiancee, a local police official said.

"A 28-year-old Ukrainian, suspected of murdering his former fiancee and her mother, was detained in the village of La Pobla de Vallbona, near Valencia," the official told RIA Novosti.

According to police, the man, who has Spanish citizenship, gained access to the women's home in the morning and stabbed his fiancee four times before slitting her mother's throat. The women apparently died instantly.

He then set fire to a neighboring home, police said, as the result of which a 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries and is currently being treated in a hospital emergency room.

"The Ukrainian split up with his fiancee, whom he had been seeing for two years, three months ago but according to the woman's father he had been trying to resume relations with her," the official said.
