Ukraine's president gives lawmakers extra day to end crisis-1
Topic: Political crisis in Ukraine
KIEV, June 1 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's president suspended for a fourth day his decree to dissolve parliament, after lawmakers failed to vote in a set of laws needed to hold snap elections, the presidential press service said.
President Viktor Yushchenko reached an agreement Sunday with Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych to hold snap polls on September 30 in a bid to end the political crisis simmering since the president dismissed parliament on April 2. However, the elections cannot be held until lawmakers amend the necessary laws.
The country's parliament resumed work after almost an hour break earlier in the day. Members of the opposition party, the Tymoshenko Bloc, have joined the session.
Parliamentarians are waiting for the results of a meeting being held in parallel to the parliamentary session between Yushchenko and Yanukovych.
