Two Jund al-Sham fighters died, and five Lebanese soldiers were injured in fighting that broke out late Sunday and continued until Monday morning at the Ain al-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon, near the Mediterranean port of Sidon.
The Lebanese army has been locked in fierce violence for over two weeks with another militant group, Fatah al-Islam, at the northern Nahr al-Barad camp near Tripoli. On Friday the army began bombarding Nahr al-Barad with artillery fire.
The new wave of violence in the southern camp appears to be a spill-over from the Nahr al-Barad conflict, which has taken more than 100 lives since May 20. Media suggested that Jund al-Sham militants are attempting to take the pressure off Fatah al-Islam, another Sunni organization, alleged to have links with al-Qaida.
