EU to restart talks with Turkey in late June

ANKARA, June 4 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union plans to start negotiations with Turkey on its accession into the European Union in late June and urged Turkey to continue with its reform process, the German foreign minister said Monday.

Turkey started negotiations on EU membership in October 2005, but the talks were halted last December over a number of issues in the EU integration dossier concerning reforms and the failure to recognize Cyprus.

"We are planning to resume negotiations with Turkey on three articles June 26," Frank-Walter Steinmeier said after an EU-Turkey meeting. Germany is currently holding the EU's rotating presidency.

He said there was no alternative to democratic reforms and that the EU hopes Turkey will continue the process, adding, that Ankara is still refusing to recognize the Republic of Cyprus, which is an EU member, and open its sea and air ports to the state, as provided under a customs union protocol.

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said Ankara is committed to EU integration and saw no technical obstacles to the process.

Experts say Turkey's integration could take 10-15 years.
