BEIRUT, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - At least 20 Islamic extremists surrendered Wednesday in the north of the country in what local Palestinian envoys see as a lost cause, the local media said.

Al Arabiya news channel, quoting the Fatah representative at Rashidiya, another refugee camp in Lebanon, put the number of gunmen that had laid down their arms at 21, and said they had surrendered to the Lebanese military in return for guarantees of a fair trial.

"The days of Fatah al-Islam are numbered. Their men are fleeing," Sultan Abul Aineyn said.

He said no more than 75 Fatah al-Islam militants were left inside Nahr al-Bared, the Palestinian refugee camp surrounded by the Lebanese army on May 21 following a day of fighting in the nearby town of Tripoli.

Most Nahr al-Bared refugees have already fled to other camps. The death toll in the violence in the Middle Eastern country is estimated at approximately 120 people: 20 civilians, 60 gunmen, and over 40 Lebanese soldiers.

About 10 gunmen were reported Tuesday to have turned themselves in to Lebanese and Fatah Palestinian officials.
