NEW DELHI, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - The Sri Lankan Army has taken four Tamil separatist camps in the east of the country, killing 30 gunmen, the Army press service said Saturday.
The military seized four machine guns, four grenade launchers and a large amount of ammunition in an operation in the Batticaloa province, which began 48 hours ago.
One serviceman was killed and 17 wounded.
At least 82 people died in a new upsurge of separatist violence Monday in the north of Sri Lanka, in the latest violation of a ceasefire deal struck in 2002 and first broken 18 months ago between the government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), an armed group that has been fighting for an ethnic Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka since 1983.
