ST. PETERSBURG, June 10 (RIA Novosti) - A canal, Eurasia, could be built to connect the Caspian and Black seas, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said at an economic forum in St. Petersburg Sunday.

"The canal will give Central Asia access to the seas through Russia," Nazarbayev said.

Central Asia is rich in natural resources and needs transport corridors for exports, the Kazakh leader said.

In spring, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed establishing an international consortium to build the second leg of the Volga-Don shipping canal. Built in 1952, the Volga-Don canal stretches over 101 km (about 63 miles) from Volgograd, a major city in southern Russia, to Kalach-on-Don, 80 km (about 50 miles) west of the city on the Volga. Its capacity is 16.5 million metric tons of cargoes per year.

The new Eurasia canal could be 1,000km (621 miles) shorter.
