MOSCOW, June 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's food safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said Tuesday it had imposed temporary restrictions on poultry imports from the Czech Republic, where a bird flu outbreak was registered last week.

The state veterinary authority of the Czech Republic confirmed last Thursday that turkeys on a farm to the east of the Czech capital had died from the lethal H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus.

"Due to a registered outbreak of bird flu containing the deadly H5N1 strain in the Pardubice region of the Czech Republic, Russia imposes temporary restrictions on imports of live chickens, eggs, poultry meat and other poultry products from the country starting June 25, 2007," Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement.

The first bird flu case was reported in the Czech Republic in the spring of 2006, with 13 registered incidents since then. Last year, the H5N1 strain was detected among wild geese.

Since late 2003, the virus has killed 191 people out of 315 known cases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
