KIEV, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's parliamentary speaker said the Supreme Rada has officially closed for the summer period until September 4 but added that the legislature could be convened at any time if required.
The country will vote for a new parliament in early elections September 30. This compromise decision ended a political standoff between pro-presidential forces and the premier's supporters. The crisis began in April when President Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree to dissolve Rada and call early elections.
Before the session was closed, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych took the floor and said the economy was performing well despite the crisis. "We have completed the anti-crisis program and laid the basis for economic growth," he said, referring to "a new effective mechanism of cooperation between the government and parliament."
