MOSCOW, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - British Minister of State for Energy Malcolm Wicks has arrived in Russia on a two day visit to discuss nuclear waste disposal, the British Embassy in Moscow said Monday.
The embassy said Wicks is currently in St. Petersburg, from where he will travel to a former naval base in Murmansk, near the Russian-Norwegian border, where about 30 tons of spent nuclear fuel is stored.
The U.K. has earmarked about $750 million as part of a G-8 10-year program to fight nuclear proliferation.
In Russia, as well as in Kazakhstan, the U.K.'s focus is on the closure of arms-grade plutonium reactors and the employment of former employees of the defense industry complex to prevent them offering their expertise elsewhere.
