TEL AVIV, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Israeli archaeologists have discovered a footprint possibly made by the sandal of a Roman legionnaire in the ruins of the ancient town of Sussita, in northern Israel, the Haaretz newspaper said Wednesday.

The hobnailed sandal might have belonged either to someone involved in building works or to a Roman soldier, the scientists from Haifa University said.

Sussita, located on the eastern side of Lake Kinneret, was founded at the time of the Seleucid Kings, and survived the Roman and Byzantine periods, as well as the Arab conquest in the seventh century. It was destroyed in 749 A.D by a major earthquake and abandoned.

The scientists said that fact helped preserve its unique treasures.
