BEIJING, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - The Chinese government has officially denied U.S. accusations that it hacked the Pentagon's computer systems in June, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

"Accusing China and the Chinese military of computer attacks is unfounded and reflects a return to Cold War thinking," Jiang Yu said.

He said the Chinese government always acts decisively against computer crimes, and particularly against cyber-attacks.

According to Western media reports citing unnamed U.S. officials, China successfully breached U.S. Defense Department computers in June following repeated attempts.

The attacks, which led to the shutdown of a computer system serving the office of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, were believed to have originated with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Although it is widely assumed that both nations regularly conduct forays into one another's computer systems, the sophistication of the latest breach has raised concerns that China has developed the ability to shut down U.S. systems at will, leaving the country potentially vulnerable in the event of a crisis.
