HAVANA, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - Cuban President Fidel Castro has met with the president of Angola in his first official meeting for three and half months, said a government press release.

"The two presidents, Fidel Castro and Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, discussed a number of complex issues facing humanity," said the message.

Taking place at an undisclosed location, the meeting between the eighty-one-year old Castro and Dos Santos was reported to have been held on Saturday afternoon and to have lasted for an hour and 45 minutes.

Castro had not appeared in public since his announcement on July 31, 2006 that essential intestinal surgery was forcing him to hand power over to a provisional government led by his 76-year-old brother, Raul.

There has been much speculation regarding the Cuban president's health of late, including widespread rumors amongst Miami-based anti-Castro Cuban exiles that the architect of the 1959 revolution had passed away.

Photographs released with the press release showed Castro very much alive, dressed in a tracksuit and shaking the Angolan president's hand. Both men were photographed standing.

Not for the first time, reports of the legendary revolutionary's death proved to be somewhat premature.
