TEHRAN, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - Ali Larijani has resigned as Iran's top representative in negotiations on the country's controversial nuclear program, a government spokesman announced on Saturday.
Gholam Hossein Elham said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had finally accepted the resignation after turning down several requests from Larijani.
Elham said the work of the National Security Council would continue interrupted, and that Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Jail could replace Larijani as the council's secretary.
The new secretary will meet with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on October 23 in Rome as planned, the spokesman said.
