TOKYO, November 2 (RIA Novosti) - Japan's Defense Ministry will track its employees by equipping their mobile phones with Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite navigation receivers following a recent scandal involving a ministry official.
Takemasa Moriya resigned as deputy defense minister in August after he was found to have ties with a private defense contractor. Moriya was said to frequently play golf and dine with a former executive of Yamada Corporation.
The new system will allow the ministry to follow its staff both in work and leisure hours, the ministry said. Information on employees' whereabouts will be recorded daily in the ministry's central database.
Some officials in the ministry have opposed the new measure, but Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba warned that staff will have to seek new posts if they refuse to comply with the new requirements.
