Venezuela president in Iran to discuss bilateral relations

14:26 19/11/2007
TEHRAN, November 19 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuela's president, Hugo Chavez, arrived on an official visit to Tehran Monday where he will meet with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The two presidents will discuss bilateral relations, and regional and international issues.

Chavez traveled to Tehran from Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), where he attended an OPEC summit. During the summit he said that if the U.S. attacked Iran or Venezuela, oil prices would jump to $200 per barrel.

He said the United States was constantly threatening Iran and some other OPEC countries, in a bid to place major oil producing states under its control.

Chavez said last Thursday Venezuela would pursue a peaceful nuclear program.

He said many other states would be compelled to do the same, since it was crucial to avert an energy crisis which is threatening the world as energy resources decline and oil prices soar.

The Venezuelan president also said he backed Iran's nuclear program.

"We support Iran, and I do not think that Iran is building a nuclear bomb," he said.
