Kiev, Moscow agree on median line in Sea of Azov

15:30 30/11/2007
KIEV, November 30 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine and Russia have agreed a maritime boundary in the Sea of Azov, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Negotiations on the border delimitation in the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea, and the Kerch Strait were held in Kiev on November 28-29.

The delegations instructed their experts with coordinating a delimitation line in the territorial seas, the continental shelf, and exclusive economic zones in the Black Sea, outlining coordinates on a schematic map.

The "median line" is an approach to dividing the water at the mid-point between the shores, and lines extending from current borders.

The two sides also discussed some aspects of draft bilateral agreements regulating navigation, shipping, fishing and environmental conservation in the Sea of Azov, the Black Sea, and the Kerch Strait.

But they failed to reach an agreement on the delimitation of the Kerch Strait.

Ukraine insists that a state border be drawn in the Kerch Strait that completely coincides with the administrative border which existed in the former Soviet Union.

Russia maintains that inland water areas were not delimited between the former Soviet republics and therefore, this principle is unable to be applied now.
