China says North Korea nuclear talks delayed

BEIJING, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - The date for the start of a new round of six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear disarmament, earlier expected to begin in early December, has not yet been set, a Chinese official said on Tuesday.

The talks, involving the two Koreas, the U.S., Japan, China and Russia, had previously been expected to resume on December 6-8.

"The schedule for the meeting has not been coordinated, and the sides are continuing to hold consultations on the issue," a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry said at a news briefing.

The announcement came shortly after the top U.S. nuclear negotiator had arrived in Pyongyang to discuss North Korean nuclear programs, the complete list of which the reclusive Communist regime has pledged to disclose in the near future.

Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill arrived in North Korea on Monday and visited the Yongbyon nuclear complex in order to inspect the ongoing work to disable the main nuclear facilities being carried out under a deal signed in October.

In return for its cooperation, North Korea is to receive aid equivalent to one million tons of fuel oil, and the U.S. has promised it will take steps to remove the country from its blacklist of countries suspected of aiding terrorism.

Hill earlier said that North Korea's denuclearization was at a crucial stage, and expressed hope that a successful conclusion of the process would lead to the normalization of relations between Washington and Pyongyang.
