VIENNA, December 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will begin to make contributions to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in 2008, a deputy foreign minister said on Tuesday.

On Monday, Alexander Yakovenko was elected as deputy chairman of the 12th general conference of the organization, whose primary objective is to promote and accelerate industrial development in developing countries and transition economies.

"Russia will voluntarily make an annual $2.6-million contribution to assist different projects in developing countries" Yakovenko said.

He said he would meet with UNIDO Director-General Kandeh Yumkella to discuss "ways of involving Russia's industrial capacities and advanced economic resources in rendering assistance to developing countries."
