Leading U.S diplomat Nicholas Burns to retire in March

Subscribe
WASHINGTON, January 18 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday that Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns is to resign in late March.

Rice added, however, that even after his departure from the State Department, Burns would still be in charge of talks between the U.S. and India on the nuclear power industry. She did not specify what position he would occupy.

High-ranking U.S. administration officials told journalists earlier that the current U.S. ambassador to Russia, William Burns, was expected to take up the post, the State Department's third-highest job.

The two diplomats are not related.
