Indian carrier rocket launches Israeli military satellite

TEL AVIV, January 21 (RIA Novosti) - An Indian carrier rocket launched from India's Shriharikota space center has delivered an Israeli military satellite into orbit, Israeli television said on Monday.

India's PSLV rocket, carrying the Israeli-made TecSar satellite, was launched on the night of January 20-21.

The launch, which was previously scheduled for December 2007, had been postponed until January due to technical problems.

The Israeli Defense Ministry deemed it necessary to launch the satellite with India's PSLV because an Israeli-made Shavit had failed to meet its requirements and would have cost $5 million more, experts say.

Israel delivered its previous intelligence satellite, Ofek-7, with the help of a domestic Shavit booster, from its own territory last June.
