WARSAW, January 25 (RIA Novosti) - Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski criticized on Friday Poland's former prime minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, and his cabinet for souring relations with Russia.

In an interview with the Polish weekly newspaper, Gosc Niedzielny, the foreign minister said Warsaw "has not had much dialogue of late" with its closest neighbor, Moscow, and even if they talked, all the communication between the two countries was "mediated by the media."

The diplomat joked that the "most significant move" towards dialogue between Warsaw and Moscow was a proposal to build the Katyn museum in front of Russia's embassy in memory of the mass execution of Poles by Soviet authorities in 1940.

Relations between Russia and Poland deteriorated after Moscow imposed an embargo on Polish meat in November 2005 claiming that meat from third countries was being imported under the cover of Polish produce, which failed to meet health standards.

In response to the embargo, Warsaw vetoed talks on a new Russia-EU partnership and a cooperation agreement.

Russia resumed meat imports in December. Earlier this week Poland's foreign minister said that negotiations on a new partnership deal between Russia and the European Union are likely to start during the first half of this year.

Other issues that have strained bilateral relations include Russia's objections to Washington's plans to deploy anti-missile defenses in Poland, and Warsaw's concerns over a Russian-German project to build a pipeline under the Baltic Sea bypassing Poland.

The victory of center-right Donald Tusk in the Polish parliamentary elections in October 2007 after the defeat of the strong Moscow critic, Kaczynski, raised hopes that Warsaw would take a more accommodating stance on disputes with Russia, including the planned deployment of U.S. missile shield elements in Poland.

"The signals that are reaching me indicate that this [a thaw in relations] is possible," Tusk said, adding that he hoped "there is such a will on the Russian side."
