Latvian woman to meet son 16 years after he was abducted
RIGA, March 26 (RIA Novosti) - A Latvian woman is to be reunited with her son more than 16 years after he was snatched from her as an infant, local officials said on Wednesday.
The 16-year-old boy, who was found in the Latvian city of Daugavpils with no ID, was identified as her son through a DNA test. Psychologists are preparing the two for their reunion, and the woman has said she is ready to take on full parental rights.
The boy had been living in Latvia with a foster mother, who was recently sentenced to a prison term. When searching for new foster parents, authorities found that the boy had no documents, and that his origins were entirely unknown.
Police then compared the boy's DNA with that of a woman who had her baby son stolen in the city in 1991. The results of the DNA check confirmed that she was his true mother.
When questioned by police, the foster mother claimed that the boy had been brought to her by her ex-husband from the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan in 1992.
