Netherlands buys Chinese mites in bid to save roses

MOSCOW, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - The Netherlands has bought around 60 million mites from China in a bid to combat insects that attack the country's roses, China's Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.

This is the first such shipment of natural "pest eaters" to Europe. The deal has cost the EU's largest rose exporter more than $10,000.

The Chinese mites, or predacious acarids, will do the work of over 3,000 metric tons of pesticide, and cost half as much, the agency said.

"China has used these mites to control pests on orange, bamboo, cotton, apple and tea plants in 350 counties in 20 provinces and municipalities," the agency cited a company official as saying.

The official added that the company could 'produce' up to 800 billion mites a year and ship them to other countries if there was a demand.
