Indian cops arrest motor biker for high-speed wheelie stunt

NEW DELHI, March 31 (RIA Novosti) - A 21 year-old biker from New Delhi was arrested for recklessness after trying to set an Indian record for the longest wheelie (riding on one wheel), national media said on Monday.

Gurpreet Singh planned to set the record on a section of expressway linking two suburbs in the Indian capital, but was arrested during a practice ride on Sunday after riding his motorbike in a wheelie for 12 km (7.4 miles) at a speed of nearly 100 kmp/h (62 mp/h).

"Wheelie... is the most difficult part of biking and I have set my eyes on an 18 kilometer-run to get my name enlisted in the Limca Book of Records," Singh said.

According to local police, Singh failed to get permission from local traffic authorities for the stunt on the expressway, "which is intended for transportation, not for stunts."

The biker said he had done nothing wrong and had taken enough safety measures.

"Four others were moving along with me to keep other vehicles away and handle me in case something went wrong. All of us take care of personal safety," he was quoted as saying.

A traffic police spokesman, Ajay Sahdev, said that frequent cases of speeding have forced authorities to install CCTV (closed circuit television) along the motorway.

In late November, two Indian teenagers were killed on the same highway trying to perform stunts from 'Dhoom,' a Bollywood action movie about a biker gang. One of them fell 40 feet down the expressway and died immediately, while the other died in hospital of his injuries after hitting the central reservation.
