BELGRADE, April 23 (RIA Novosti) - Albanian police have detained five people suspected of smuggling weapons to Kosovo, Macedonia's MIA news agency reported.
Two Kosovo residents and three Albanian nationals, of whom one is a police officer and another works at a military depot, were detained during a special operation in the northern Albanian city of Burrel, near the Macedonian border.
Police found over 7,000 ammunition rounds, prepared for shipment to Kosovo. Police did not give information on who the arms were intended for.
Albanian organized crime groups have retained a strong presence in Kosovo since the breakup of Yugoslavia. The province declared its unilateral independence from Serbia on February 17, and has been formally recognized by 37 countries.
