ASTANA, April 24 (RIA Novosti) - Kazakhstan's parliament ratified on Thursday a United Nations convention on preventing nuclear terrorism, the press service of the upper house announced.

The bill on ratifying the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism has been submitted to President Nursultan Nazarbayev for signing.

The agreement "defines the act of nuclear terrorism as the use or threat to use nuclear material, nuclear fuel, radioactive products or waste, or any other radioactive substances with toxic, explosive, or other dangerous properties," and outlines measures aimed to prevent terrorist attacks involving the use of nuclear or other radioactive materials.

The signatories to the convention, adopted by the UN General Assembly in April 2005, at the same time acknowledge the right of countries to develop and use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
