ANKARA, May 3 (RIA Novosti) - Over 150 Kurdish militants were killed in an air raid by the Turkish Air Force in northern Iraq on May 1, the Turkish General Staff said Saturday.

The operation that employed about 30 F-16 Fighting Falcon multirole fighters was carried out in the Qandil Mountains, believed to harbor the main bases of the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

"According to preliminary data, the operation killed more than 150 terrorists, possibly including ringleaders," the General Staff said.

The PKK has been fighting for an autonomous ethnic Kurd state in southeast Turkey for nearly 25 years, killing more than 40,000 people in that period. The PKK uses northern Iraq to stage attacks on Turkey.

In February, the Turkish army held a large-scale cross-border operation against the PKK, considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and EU, killing, according to official data, 240 militants.
