Israel, Hamas agree on Gaza truce from June 19 - Egypt

CAIRO, June 17 (RIA Novosti) - Israel and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas have agreed on a ceasefire in Gaza starting June 19, Egyptian mediators told the MENA news agency on Tuesday.

"The Palestinian and Israeli sides have accepted the first stage of a reciprocal and simultaneous period of calm, starting in the Gaza Strip," beginning on Thursday morning, the agency quoted an unnamed Egyptian official as saying.

"Egypt hopes all sides will exert full efforts to achieve a successful truce," the official said.

Israel has not yet confirmed the deal. Hamas said an agreement had been reached, and that the Islamist group, which controls Gaza, would observe the start-time of the truce.

In the run-up to the announcement, Israeli forces continued operations in Gaza, killing six militants earlier on Tuesday.

Israel closed off Gaza border crossings in January this year and imposed restrictions on essential supplies in an attempt to pressure Hamas to halt rocket attacks against Israeli border towns.
