TBILISI, July 1 (RIA Novosti) - Polish President Lech Kaczynski predicted with confidence Tuesday that Georgia and Ukraine would soon join NATO.

The Polish leader was speaking in the Georgian city of Batumi at a two-day summit of GUAM, a grouping of four former Soviet republics - Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova. The third GUAM summit closed late Tuesday.

"Georgia and Ukraine will soon become NATO members. Nobody doubts that, and despite the fact that Poland lacks a deciding vote, we will be happy to support the decision to grant a Membership Action Plan to Georgia and Ukraine," Kaczynski said.

At a summit in Bucharest in April, NATO members decided against offering Ukraine or Georgia a Membership Action Plan but promised to review the decision in December. The ex-Soviet republics had received strong U.S. backing for their bids.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned Russia last week that its unreasonable actions could help to speed up Georgia's accession to NATO.

Relations between Russia and Georgia have been strained since Russia stepped up support for Abkhazia and South Ossetia, another breakaway Georgian republic. The pro-Western government of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has said it is determined to bring the breakaway regions back under its control, while Moscow says Tbilisi's policies could lead to new bloodshed.
