LAGONISSI (Greece), July 1 (RIA Novosti) - Serbia's new cabinet could be formed by July 4, President Boris Tadic said on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters at the Socialist International congress in Greece, he said: "We will form a government this coming Friday, or possibly next Monday."

Last week, Tadic proposed that Finance Minister Cvetkovic of the pro-Western Democratic Party become prime minister. Lawmakers are set to vote on his candidacy this week.

The new government "will work hard to restore infrastructure and build a better, balanced society. These are our two main goals," Tadic said.

On the subject of Kosovo, which unilaterally declared its dependence from Serbia in February, the president said: "We intend to defend our sovereignty in relation to Kosovo. But we will do this the European way, using diplomatic routes, not aggressive warfare."

"We will seek a compromise, and conduct talks in search of a solution that will be acceptable to both sides," he said.

Kosovo's independence has been recognized by 43 of 192 UN member states, including the United States and most European Union members.

Russia has supported its ally Serbia in refusing to recognize the world's 'newest state'.
