BEIRUT, July 21 (RIA Novosti) - Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on a visit to Beirut, has confirmed his country's readiness to establish diplomatic relations with Lebanon.
"We intend to open an embassy in Lebanon and to establish diplomatic relations with the country," he told Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.
Lebanese-Syrian relations plummeted after the 2005 assassination of former Prime Lebanese Minister Rafik Hariri, which was widely blamed on Damascus and its Lebanese allies. Syria strongly denied involvement.
Al-Moallem also said the two countries are working on demarcating their borders.
"Nothing is preventing the Lebanese from demarcating the Lebanese-Syrian border," he said.
