S.Ossetia accuses Georgia of disrupting reconstruction program

21:21 29/07/2008
TBILISI, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia accused the Georgian authorities Tuesday of disrupting the region's internationally-sponsored reconstruction program.

"Along with the negotiating process, the Georgian side is also blocking the implementation of the program," said South Ossetian Deputy Prime Minister Boris Chochiyev, also the country's co-chairman of the Joint Control Commission (JCC).

A delegation from the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi visited the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, earlier Tuesday for talks with Chochiyev on the post-conflict reconstruction.

"We said at the meeting that of the 8 million euros ($12.5 million) allocated for the donor program, slightly more than 1 million has been spent on [reconstruction] programs," the South Ossetian official said.

South Ossetia declared its independence from Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Hundreds died in the bloody conflict that followed. The pro-Western Georgian leadership has said it is determined to bring the region, along with another breakaway republic, Abkhazia, back under central control.
