Death toll in Vietnam floods hits 98
09:58 11/08/2008
HANOI, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains have killed 98 people in Vietnam's northern provinces in the past four days, the center for flood and typhoon prevention said on Monday.
Another 48 people are currently missing, and the death toll looks likely to rise.
Floods caused by tropical storm Kammuri have almost cut off villages in the Lao Cai province, which borders China, and neighboring Yen Bai. Tens of thousands of homes were destroyed or badly damaged as river waters rose to their highest level in the last 22 years, the center said.
Floods and landslides have blocked almost all the motorways and railways in the provinces. The delivery of aid to the area by helicopters has been complicated by weather conditions.
