JAKARTA, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - Two people were killed and 60 injured in a 5.6 magnitude quake that hit Indonesia's south Sumatra province, Indonesia's national news agency ANTARA said citing local officials.

The moderate quake struck the southwest coastal province of Bengkulu at 10:07 a.m. (03:07 GMT) on Tuesday.

Two people were killed and at least 60 injured, with 10 of them hospitalized, the country's health officials said. The quake also damaged over 50 houses in several villages in the neighboring Lahat district. A rescue operation is underway.

Indonesia is a sprawling archipelago located on the so called Pacific Ring of Fire, where two continental plates meet. The area, encircling the basin of the Pacific Ocean, has frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Indonesia was the worst-hit country following the giant December 2004 earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 225,000 people.
