An 82-year-old man drowned after being swept into a flooded rice field, while an 18 year-old girl was killed by a fallen electric cable as Typhoon Jangmi wrecked havoc in Taiwan.
Jangmi, which means "rose" in Korean, is the most powerful storm to hit Taiwan this year. With winds raging at a speed of 227 kmph (141 mph), it cut electricity supplies to 86,000 homes and forced the evacuation of 3,000 rural residents.
Taiwan's airports have now reopened, but schools, banks, the stock exchange, and other facilities remain closed.
Early on Monday, the typhoon, which was ranked 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale, weakened to a category 1 hurricane. It is currently heading northward to China's eastern coast, where 460,000 people have already been evacuated.
Jangmi is the 15th hurricane to hit the region during the present storm season, and the third this month.
