NEW DELHI, October 2 (RIA Novosti) - The number of people killed in Tuesday's temple stampede in the western Indian state of Rajasthan has risen to 224, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

The official death toll, earlier reported as 147, was revised after it was found that many people had carried their dead relatives home after the disaster.

Another 50 people injured in the stampede are still being treated in hospital.

The tragedy, the worst of its kind since 2005, occurred at the 15th-century Chamunda Devi Temple in the city of Jodhpur as pilgrims gathered for the start of a Hindu festival. Panic broke out after some people slipped on a slope leading up to the temple, located in a hilltop fort.

In late January 2005 a total of 340 people were trampled to death during an annual pilgrimage at the Mandhra Devi temple in Maharashtra.
