BEIJING, October 6 (RIA Novosti) - At least 30 people were killed in an earthquake which hit the Tibet Autonomous Region in China on Monday, the country's Xinhua news agency said, citing the local administration.

The 6.6-magnitude quake was registered at 08:30 GMT some 80 km (50 miles) to the east of Lhasa, the administrative center of Tibet. The Gedar township of Damxung County was the hardest hit with many people reported to be still trapped beneath the rubble.

The quake was felt in Lhasa, but no damage or casualties have been reported. The high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet railway and Lhasa Airport are operating as normal.

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale hit a mountainous area in northwest China's Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture late on Sunday. The tremor with the epicenter near China's western border with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan destroyed more than 80 houses, but there were no reports of casualties.

The earthquake occurred about 20 minutes after an earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale killed at least 72 people and destroyed more than 120 buildings in neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
