CAIRO, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - At least seven people died and another 10 were injured when a four-story apartment building collapsed in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, the MENA news agency said on Wednesday.
The tragedy occurred late on Tuesday night when most residents were home. Among the dead are a woman and a newborn child, the news agency reported.
Rescuers are searching the rubble to try and find survivors. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
According to statistics, around 2 million buildings in Egypt are in a dangerous condition.
Safety violations have been the cause of numerous building collapses in the country. In September, more than 100 people died when falling rocks flattened a densely populated Cairo shanty town. In December 2007, a 12-story building in Alexandria collapsed, burying around 30 people under the debris.
