Georgia accuses Russia of violating airspace again

18:33 15/10/2008
MOSCOW/TBILISI, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia accused the Russian military on Wednesday of violating Georgian airspace, while Russia's Air Force denied the allegation.

The administration of the Georgian region of Shida Kartli said a Russian military helicopter had conducted reconnaissance flights near the Medzhvriskhevi village in eastern Georgia.

However, a Russian Air Force spokesman said: "There have been no flights of Russian aviation in that area."

Georgia's Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Russian aircraft had twice violated the country's airspace that day.

The situation on Georgia's borders with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the breakaway Georgian republics recognized as independent by Moscow, has remained tense since the five-day August war between Russia and Georgia.

International discussions on security and stability in the Caucasus started at the Geneva Palace of Nations on Wednesday. Russia's Foreign Ministry said the country expects agreements to be reached ensuring security in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
