Berlin resident gives birth to sextuplets
16:28 20/10/2008
BERLIN, October 20 (RIA Novosti) - A young woman in Berlin has given birth to sextuplets - four girls and two boys, local media reported on Monday.
The children were born prematurely on October 16 after a 27-week pregnancy, weighing around 800 grams (1lb 12oz) each, doctors at the Charite University Medical Center in Berlin said.
The mother had been taking fertility medication.
The probability of a woman delivering sextuplets is about one in four million. As sextuplets are usually born prematurely, the survival rate is low.
Germany's last sextuplets were born in Munich in 1986. The mother and one of the children died shortly after delivery.
